A narration from ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها confirms that the Prophet ﷺ was given ghusl while his body was covered in clothes.
When the Companions were uncertain regarding how to wash the Prophet ﷺ after his passing, Allah ﷻ caused sleep to overtake them, and then a voice was heard saying:
«اغسلو النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم وعليه ثيابه»
“Wash the Prophet ﷺ while he is still in his garments.”
[Ḥasan: Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd 2693, Kitāb al-Janāʾiz: Bāb fī Sitr al-Mayt ʿinda Ghuslih, also Abū Dāwūd 3141]
① Ghusl of the Prophet ﷺ was performed while he remained clothed, in order to maintain his honor and modesty.
② This practice was unique to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and was done based on divine instruction.
③ This incident also highlights the importance of proper etiquette in handling the deceased and the divinely guided conduct of the Companions.
