The Obligation of Performing Funeral Prayer for the Deceased

❖ Obligation of Performing Funeral Prayer Over the Deceased ❖
Written by: Imran Ayub Lahori

Offering the funeral prayer (Ṣalāh al-Janāzah) for the deceased is an obligatory act in Islam.

◈ Prophetic Practice Emphasizing Obligation

❖ It is narrated that when someone who was in debt passed away, the Prophet ﷺ refrained from leading his funeral prayer, yet instructed others to perform it, saying:

"صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ"
"Pray over your companion."
[Bukhari: 5371, 6731 – Kitab an-Nafaqat: Chapter on the Prophet's saying: ‘Whoever leaves dependents…’; Muslim: 1619; Ahmad: 2/290; Nasai: 4/26; Tirmidhi: 1070; Ibn Majah: 2415; Abu Dawood: 2955]

🔹 This indicates that even when the Prophet ﷺ abstained, he did not permit neglecting the prayer entirely, but rather directed others to fulfill the duty — underscoring its communal obligation.

◈ Scholarly Views on Obligation

Imam Ibn Hazm (رحمه الله):
"It is obligatory (فرض) to offer funeral prayer over every deceased Muslim."
[Al-Muhalla bil-Athar: 3/336]

Siddiq Hasan Khan (رحمه الله):
"It is a communal obligation (فرض كفاية)."
[Ar-Rawdah an-Nadiyyah: 1/415]

Shaykh al-Albani (رحمه الله):
"Funeral prayer over a Muslim is a communal obligation (فرض كفاية)."
[Ahkam al-Jana'iz: p. 103]

🟨 Summary

❖ Offering the funeral prayer over a deceased Muslim is a communal obligation (فرض كفاية) — meaning, if some perform it, the rest are absolved. But if no one fulfills it, all share in the sin.
