The Narration About Light and Prostration at the Birth of the Prophet ﷺ

Authored by: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid (ḥafiẓahullāh)

❖ The Reported Event by Āminah (Mother of the Prophet ﷺ)

It is narrated from Āminah, the noble mother of the Prophet ﷺ:

“When you (i.e., the Prophet ﷺ) were born, a light shone forth which illuminated the entire East and West. You fell upon the ground supported by your hands (perhaps meaning you fell into prostration), then you grasped a handful of soil (which the people of Mawlid interpret as a symbolic gesture of seizing the entire earth), and you lifted your head toward the sky.”

❖ Ḥadīth Authentication:

Status of the narration:Weak (ḍaʿīf)

✔ This story is mentioned by Ibn Saʿd through multiple chains,
but none of them are strong or authentic.

✔ Similar reports are also found in Abū Nuʿaym’s works and in al-Ṭabarānī,
yet their condition is equally weak.

Therefore, the narration is not reliable and cannot be accepted as sound evidence in Islamic teachings.
