Question:
The word ‘ishq is often used in Urdu poetry, and it is also found in the poetry of Allama Iqbal. What is its meaning, and what is the clarification of this word in the light of Qur’an and Hadith?

Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Generally, the word ‘ishq is used to denote vain and useless love. For this reason, it is better to avoid using this term.

If someone is doubtful about this, he may try an experiment:
If the word ‘ishq is used regarding someone’s mother, that person will never approve of it—even though it is universally known that a person naturally has deep and genuine love for his mother.

Hādhā mā ʿindī wallāhu aʿlam bis-ṣawāb.
