The Love of the Heart: A Guarantee of One's Fate in the Hereafter

The mutual attachment of hearts is a natural phenomenon, beautifully encapsulated in the words of the Prophet ﷺ:
"الأرواح جنود مجندة"
(“Souls are like conscripted soldiers”)
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 4773)

This profound statement offers both hope and a cause for concern. The question, "Who does the heart attach itself to?", is, in essence, a decisive indicator of one's outcome in the Hereafter. Blessed indeed is the heart that overflows with love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Love, though often explained in various ways, remains a deeply natural and intuitive emotion that defies precise articulation. Some people are drawn to Allah, His Prophets, and the righteous; others to transgressors and those doomed to misfortune. This affinity reflects one’s destiny, as articulated by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

"المرء مع من أحب"
(“A person will be with whom he loves.”)

Love for the Prophet ﷺ is a mark of divine favour. Every individual can gauge their spiritual rank and position based on the depth of their love for the Prophet ﷺ. This love was not confined to the era of the Companions but extends until the Day of Judgment.

Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Among the most beloved to me from my ummah are those who will come after me and would wish to give up all their wealth and family just to see me once.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 5060)

Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رحمه الله used to narrate the incident of the wooden pillar in Masjid al-Nabawī that let out a sound like a weeping she-camel when the Prophet ﷺ moved to the pulpit. It cried until the Prophet ﷺ placed his blessed hand upon it and consoled it. Every time Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رحمه الله mentioned this, he would tear up and say:

“O servants of Allah! That was a lifeless wooden pillar longing for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—how much greater is his right upon you?”

All nations honour their esteemed figures and preserve sacred traditions. For us, the most sacred of all is our connection to Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, His Book, and His religion. These are values beyond compromise, a unique distinction that belongs only to the Muslim Ummah today. However, if we fail to cherish this uniqueness, we may lose this glorious honour despite all its magnificence.
