My brother, who is not well-educated and works at a PCO (Public Call Office), does not have the scholarly understanding required to comprehend Islam in depth. One day, he had a severe argument with his wife. In that moment, in my presence, he pronounced divorce three times upon her in one go.
Alhamdulillah, I had studied the issue of triple divorce to some extent. Therefore, I immediately advised my brother to reconcile, and he accepted my advice and reconciled with his wife. Today, they have two children and are living a happy life.
My intention was to resolve the matter based on the Qur’an and Sunnah. However, I often wonder: since I am not a Mufti, was my decision correct or not? Please guide me. Jazakum Allahu Khayran.
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd!
The advice you gave your brother—Alhamdulillah—was entirely correct and sound. This is because, during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, three divorces given in a single sitting were considered only one divorce.
For more details on this issue, you are advised to refer to Fatwa No. 5248 from the same source, which elaborates on the ruling of triple divorce and its treatment according to Qur’an and Sunnah.
➤ Your intervention was aligned with authentic Islamic teachings.
➤ The reconciliation you encouraged was valid, and the couple's continued life together is permissible and supported by evidence from the time of the Prophet ﷺ.
