The Fasting of Sayyiduna Dawood (peace be upon him) in the Light of Hadith: Virtues and Method

This excerpt is taken from Sheikh Abu Hamza Abdul Khaliq Siddiqi's book Sahih Fazail-e-Amaal.

The Fasts of Sayyiduna Dawood (peace be upon him)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas رضي الله عنهما that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
أحب الصلاة إلى الله صلاة داود عليه السلام، وأحب الصيام إلى الله صيام داود، وكان ينام نصف الليل، ويصوم ثلثه، وينام سدسه، ويصوم يوما ويفطر يوما .
"Allah Almighty loves the prayer of Sayyiduna Dawood عليه السلام the most, and the fasting most beloved to Allah Almighty is the fasting of Sayyiduna Dawood عليه السلام. He used to sleep for half the night, then wake up for worship for one-third of it, then sleep for one-sixth of it again. He used to fast one day and break his fast the next day."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr رضي الله عنهما that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
فإن بحسبك أن تصوم من كل شهر ثلاثة أيام، قلت: يا نبي الله إني أطيق أفضل من ذلك قال.... فصم صوم داود نبي الله ﷺ فإنه كان أعبد الناس .
"Fast three days every month." I said: I have more strength than that. He صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said: Fast like the Prophet of Allah Dawood عليه السلام, (my brother) Sayyiduna Dawood عليه السلام was very devoted in worship."
