The Date of Martyrdom of Umar رضي الله عنه: A Research Review of the Narrations

Written by: Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amanpuri Hafizahullah

The Day of Martyrdom of Umar رضي الله عنه

Attributed to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair رضي الله عنهما: طعن عمر يوم الأربعاء لثلاث بقين من ذي الحجة ثم بقي ثلاثة أيام ثم مات رحمه الله.

Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه was wounded three days before Muharram on Wednesday, and after living for three days, he drank the cup of martyrdom, may Allah have mercy on him.

Comment:

The narration is weak.

The teachers of Hafiz Abu al-Arab are "not singular," ambiguous, and unknown.

Asad bin Furat’s authentication is not reliable.

Reference: Tabaqat Ibn Saad (3/335) and Tarikh al-Tabari (2/193)
The narration is weak due to Waqidi.

Warning:

It is not correct to consider its chain connected.

Among the teachers of Hafiz Abu al-Arab (333 AH) is not Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar al-Madani (approximately 150 AH), meeting and hearing is also not possible, so how can the chain be connected?

Hafiz Abu al-Arab mentioned all the narrations of Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Madani in this book with intermediaries.

In this chain, it is Muhammad bin Ishaq Madani; it is not correct to consider him as Saeed bin Ishaq or any other narrator. If there is any Ibn Ishaq other than Madani, the chain will be broken, rather problematic. Among the students of Yahya bin Abbad (died approximately after 100 AH), only Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar Madani is present.

Benefit:

Saeed bin Musayyib, may Allah have mercy on him, says: ما انسلخ ذو الحجة حتى قتل عمر رحمه الله.

Dhul-Hijjah was not yet complete when Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was martyred, may Allah have mercy on him.

Reference: (Muwatta Imam Malik: 2/824, and its chain is authentic)

It is understood that the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, occurred at the end of Dhul-Hijjah, واللہ اعلم!
