❀ Proper Method of Performing Rukūʿ in Salah

Rukūʿ (bowing) is one of the essential pillars of Salah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has clearly emphasized its correct execution, and a number of authentic narrations describe its precise manner.

① Straightening the Back is Essential

Sayyidunā Abū Masʿūd al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"That prayer is not sufficient in which a person does not straighten his back in Rukūʿ and Sujūd."

📚 [Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd: 761; Kitāb al-Ṣalāh: Bāb Ṣalāh man lā yuqīm Ṣulbah...; Abū Dāwūd: 855; Tirmidhī: 265; Nasā’ī: 2/183; Ibn Mājah: 870; Dārimī: 1/304; Aḥmad: 4/112; ʿAbd al-Razzāq: 2856; Ibn Khuzaymah: 591]

✔ It is obligatory to completely straighten the back in Rukūʿ, as failure to do so invalidates the posture.

② Description of Rukūʿ Posture

In the state of Rukūʿ:

✔ The back should be fully straightened, forming a horizontal line.
✔ The head should be level with the back, neither drooping down nor raised upwards.
✔ The palms should rest firmly on the knees.

📚 [Muslim: 498; Bukhārī: 828]

③ Instruction to the Man Who Prayed Incorrectly

The Prophet ﷺ taught the man who prayed incorrectly (al-Musīʾ al-Ṣalāh):

“Place your palms on your knees and spread your fingers apart.”

📚 [Ṣifat Ṣalāt al-Nabī by al-Albānī: p. 130]

④ Gripping the Knees Firmly and Spacing the Elbows

During Rukūʿ, the Prophet ﷺ:

Gripped his knees firmly,
✔ And kept his elbows away from his sides.

📚 [Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Tirmidhī: 214; Kitāb al-Ṣalāh: Bāb Mā Jāʾa Annahu Yuḥāfī Yadayhi ʿan Janbayhi fī al-Rukūʿ; Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd: 723; al-Mishkāt: 801; Tirmidhī: 260]

⑤ Fingers Should Be Spread During Rukūʿ

It is narrated that:

"When the Prophet ﷺ bowed in Rukūʿ, he would separate his fingers."

📚 [Ṣaḥīḥ: Ḥākim: 1/244; Bayhaqī: 2/112; Dāraquṭnī: 1/339]
✔ Declared authentic by Imām Ḥākim and Imām Dhahabī رحمهما الله.
