The Concept of Isbagh al-Wudu and the Ruling on Excess in Ablution

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

What does Isbagh al-Wudu mean? And what is the ruling regarding avoiding excess in ablution?

❀ Answer:

✦ Meaning of Isbagh al-Wudu:
Isbagh al-Wudu means to perform ablution completely and correctly, ensuring that all the limbs required for ablution are thoroughly washed so that no part remains dry. It is obligatory to wash all the limbs included in the Fara'id (obligatory acts) of ablution completely. If any of these limbs have dirt or filth, it must be cleaned as part of the ablution process.

The statement of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنه, as narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari, explains this very meaning—that the limbs of ablution should be washed properly, even if they must be washed multiple times, provided the purpose of cleanliness is fulfilled.

✦ The Sunnah and Limits in Washing:
Washing the limbs three times is Sunnah. Washing them more than this falls under isrāf (extravagance), as the Prophet ﷺ stated:

"When one washes a limb more than three times, he has done evil, exceeded the limits, and committed injustice."
(Sunan al-Nasa’i, Sunan Ibn Majah, Sunan Abu Dawud)

This Hadith clearly indicates that washing the limbs of ablution more than three times is impermissible, as it constitutes extravagance and excess, which are disapproved of in Islamic law.

✦ On the Weakness of a Commonly Quoted Hadith:
The Hadith that says, "Avoid extravagance, even if you are on a flowing river," is weak because one of its narrators, Ibn Lahi‘ah, is unreliable. Hence, this narration cannot be presented as valid evidence.

✔ Summary:

Isbagh al-Wudu means to perform ablution fully and to wash the limbs thoroughly.
② Washing each limb three times is Sunnah; washing more than this constitutes extravagance and excess, which is disapproved.
③ Moderation is commanded in performing ablution, and the use of excessive water (isrāf) is prohibited, even if water is abundantly available.
