This excerpt is taken from Sheikh Muhammad Iqbal Kilani's book "Al-Wala Wal Bara" .
حکم البراء عن المنــافقین
The command is to sever ties with hypocrites.
[وَ یَقُوۡلُوۡنَ طَاعَۃٌ ۫ فَاِذَا بَرَزُوۡا مِنۡ عِنۡدِکَ بَیَّتَ طَآئِفَۃٌ مِّنۡہُمۡ غَیۡرَ الَّذِیۡ تَقُوۡلُ ؕ وَ اللّٰہُ یَکۡتُبُ مَا یُبَیِّتُوۡنَ ۚ فَاَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡہُمۡ وَ تَوَکَّلۡ عَلَی اللّٰہِ ؕ وَ کَفٰی بِاللّٰہِ وَکِیۡلًا]
And (the hypocrites) say, "We are obedient to you," but when they leave your presence, a group of them gathers by night to plan against you. Allah is recording all their plans. Turn away from them and rely upon Allah; He is sufficient as a disposer of affairs.

Allah's Displeasure, Enmity, and Hatred towards the Hypocrites.
① [اِسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَہُمۡ اَوۡ لَا تَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَہُمۡ ؕ اِنۡ تَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَہُمۡ سَبۡعِیۡنَ مَرَّۃً فَلَنۡ یَّغۡفِرَ اللّٰہُ لَہُمۡ ؕ ذٰلِکَ بِاَنَّہُمۡ کَفَرُوۡا بِاللّٰہِ وَ رَسُوۡلِہٖ ؕ وَ اللّٰہُ لَا یَہۡدِی الۡقَوۡمَ الۡفٰسِقِیۡنَ]Whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them, it is the same for them; Allah will not forgive them. This is because they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient.

②[سَیَحۡلِفُوۡنَ بِاللّٰہِ لَکُمۡ اِذَا انۡقَلَبۡتُمۡ اِلَیۡہِمۡ لِتُعۡرِضُوۡا عَنۡہُمۡ ؕ فَاَعۡرِضُوۡا عَنۡہُمۡ ؕ اِنَّہُمۡ رِجۡسٌ ۫ وَّ مَاۡوٰىہُمۡ جَہَنَّمُ ۚ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا کَانُوۡا یَکۡسِبُوۡنَ]
When you return from the battle and come to them, they swear by Allah to you so that you may be pleased with them. Turn away from them; indeed, they are impure, and their refuge is Hell, as a recompense for what they used to do.

③[یَحۡلِفُوۡنَ لَکُمۡ لِتَرۡضَوۡا عَنۡہُمۡ ۚ فَاِنۡ تَرۡضَوۡا عَنۡہُمۡ فَاِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَا یَرۡضٰی عَنِ الۡقَوۡمِ الۡفٰسِقِیۡنَ]
The hypocrites swear by you so that you might be pleased with them. But if you are pleased with them, then indeed Allah is not pleased with the defiantly disobedient.

Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) immediately disassociated from the hypocrites.
[عن موسى بن عقبة: قال ابن شهاب: سمع زيد بن أرقم رجلا من المنافقين يقول والنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يخطب: لئن كان هذا صادقا لنحن شر من الحمير. فقال زيد: قد والله صدق، ولأنت شر من الحمار. ورفع ذلك إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فجحده القائل، فأنزل الله على رسوله: {يحلفون بالله ما قالوا} الآية، فكان مما أنزل الله في هذه الآية تصديقا لزيد]
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Musa bin Uqbah that Ibn Shahab said: Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam رضي الله عنه heard one of the hypocrites saying, "If this person (i.e., Sayyiduna Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) is truthful, then we are all worse than donkeys." Sayyiduna Zaid رضي الله عنه immediately replied upon hearing this: "By Allah! It is absolutely true that you are worse than a donkey." When this reached the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم, the one who said it (the hypocrite) retracted his statement. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "They swear by Allah that they did not say [anything against the Prophet], while they had certainly said the word of disbelief."

From what was revealed in this verse, Sayyiduna Zaid رضي الله عنه's statement was proven true.
