The Burdened Man: Sacrifices Behind the Silence in a Family’s Life

❖ The Beginning of Life and the Burden of Responsibility ❖
✍ By: Fareena Almas

✦ The Beginning of Life and the Burden of Responsibility

The dream of bringing a new life into the world is shared by both man and woman. From the birth of a child to its upbringing and the challenges of practical life, both parents are companions in this journey. The woman lives in the joy of motherhood, while the man remains burdened by responsibilities. From hospital expenses to milk, clothing, and daily necessities, the weight of provision rests on his shoulders. This is the start of a long path, where he must sacrifice endlessly to fulfill the dreams of his children.

✦ The Silence of Men: A Sign of Apathy or Sacrifice?

Men do not voice their troubles aloud. They suppress their fears and worries in silence, which often leads to them being labeled as indifferent or negligent. It is said that men don’t cry, but the reality is that those who can weep and lighten their sorrows are fortunate—while the pain of a man remains locked within.

✦ Why Is the Man Always the Oppressor?

Society frequently addresses the oppression faced by women, but ignores the trials and sacrifices of men. Countless men fall prey to betrayal and abandonment, even to the point of losing their lives, but no one offers them even words of sympathy.

✦ Exile and the Ordeal of Men

The life of a man toiling abroad in foreign lands is full of agonies and hardships. His wife not only fulfills her desires with the money he sends but also caters to the demands of her own family. Some women go as far as to enjoy luxuries at the expense of their husbands and involve others in this indulgence. If a man fails to meet the household expenses, even his own mother, sisters, and wife shower him with reproaches.

✦ Inflation, Brand Culture, and Male Helplessness

Today, the brand culture has made the domestic economy even more burdensome. Women consider shopping for expensive clothes, bags, and shoes from malls a necessity—even if the head of the family drowns in debt. To fulfill these desires, men are pushed to the point of physical illness, debt, and utter exhaustion, but these sacrifices are seldom acknowledged.

✦ Double Labour and the Absence of Gratitude

To increase his income, a man works tirelessly from morning till night—office during the day, part-time job or driving in the evening, and returning home late at night. All this is done simply to meet the basic needs of his household. Yet, his sacrifices go unmentioned, while women are quick to present their contributions as favors.

✦ Women's Rights—But Recognize the Man's Humanity Too

If the work of a woman is considered a burden, then why is the brother responsible for his sister, the father for his daughter's education and marriage, and the husband for every desire of his wife?

Oppression indeed exists for women, but often another woman is the perpetrator—such as a mother-in-law, sister-in-law, or even a mother who may push her daughter to the edge of death.

❖ Conclusion: A Balanced Approach to Justice Is Essential

The narrative that portrays men always as oppressors and women as perpetual victims is one-sided and flawed. Just as condemning injustice against women is essential, so too is the acknowledgment of male sacrifices.

If society adopts a realistic and balanced perspective, many injustices can be corrected—and true justice can prevail for both men and women alike.
