Chapter: The Best of People Are Those With the Best Character

Narration of Masruq:
Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) arrived in Kufa with Muawiya (may Allah be pleased with him), we went to him. He mentioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "He was neither indecent nor did he ever deliberately speak indecently." Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Indeed, the best among you are those who have the best character."
[Agreed upon: Narrated by Bukhari 6029 and Muslim 2321]

Narration of Abdullah bin Amr:
Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Shall I not inform you about the most beloved of you to me and the closest to me in sitting on the Day of Judgment?"
The people remained silent, and he repeated it two or three times. The people said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He ﷺ said:
"Those of you with the best character."

Narration of Jabir bin Samurah:
Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was in a gathering in which the Prophet ﷺ was present, and my father Samurah was sitting in front of me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Indecency and vulgarity are not from Islam. And indeed, the best among the Muslims is he who has the best character."
[Hasan: Narrated by Ahmad 20831 and Abu Ya’la 7468]

Narration of Usamah bin Sharik:
Usamah bin Sharik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Prophet ﷺ, and it was as if birds were sitting on our heads (due to our silence). Then some Bedouins came and asked questions: "O Messenger of Allah, give us your verdict regarding such and such issue..."
He ﷺ said:
"O people, indeed Allah has removed hardship from you except for one who takes something from his brother’s honor, he is the one who is ruined."
They said: "O Messenger of Allah, can we seek treatment?" He ﷺ replied:
"Yes, for indeed Allah has not sent down any disease but that He has also sent down its cure, except for one disease."
They said: "What is that, O Messenger of Allah?" He ﷺ said:
"Old age (death)."
They then asked: "Who are the most beloved to Allah, O Messenger of Allah?"
He ﷺ said:
"The most beloved of people to Allah are those with the best character."

Narration of Abdullah bin Mas’ud:
Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Shall I inform you of the best among you?"
They said: "Yes."
He ﷺ said:
"The best among you are those with the best character," and I think he ﷺ also said:
"Those who are humble and accommodating."

Narration of Jabir:
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Indeed, the most beloved of you to me and the closest to me in sitting on the Day of Judgment are those with the best character. And the most disliked of you to me and the farthest from me in sitting on the Day of Judgment are those who are talkative, boastful, and arrogant."
The companions asked: "O Messenger of Allah, we know the talkative and the boastful, but who are the متفيهقون?"
He ﷺ said:
"They are the arrogant ones."
