The Believer Is a Mirror to His Fellow Believer and the Virtue of Brotherhood

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman A‘zami رحمه الله
Chapter: The Believer Is a Mirror to Another Believer

«باب أن المؤمن مرآة المؤمن»

✿ A Believer Reflects the Truth for His Fellow Believer

Narrated by Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه):

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A believer is the mirror of his fellow believer, and a believer is the brother of his fellow believer. Wherever he meets him, he protects his property and guards him from behind.”
[Hasan: Reported by Abū Dāwūd 4918, al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad 239, and al-Bazzār 8109]

✿ Brotherhood in Faith

Narrated by Anas ibn Mālik (رضي الله عنه):

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A believer is a mirror to another believer.”
[Hasan: Reported by al-Bazzār 6193, al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsaṭ 2114, and al-Ḍiyā in al-Mukhtārah 2185]

❖ Key Lessons:

① A true believer reflects the faults and strengths of his fellow believer with sincerity, just as a mirror shows one’s image truthfully.
Islamic brotherhood is built on trust, loyalty, and mutual protection—spiritually, morally, and materially.
③ Every believer should strive to support, advise, and protect his fellow believers as part of his faith.
