❖ The Question
A Tafsīr is attributed to Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنه, commonly known as Tafsīr Ibn ʿAbbās. What is its chain authenticity?
❖ The Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
The reality of Tafsīr Ibn ʿAbbās is that its isnād is known as silsilat al-kadhib (a chain of lies).
- Its chain contains Muḥammad ibn Marwān al-Suddī, who is accused of fabrication (muttaham bil-kadhib).
- He narrates from Muḥammad ibn al-Sāʾib al-Kalbī, who was a Rāfiḍī and also accused of fabrication.
- Al-Kalbī narrates from Abū Ṣāliḥ Bādhām, who is a narrator declared matrūk (abandoned).
Moreover, according to the explicit statements of ḥadīth scholars, Abū Ṣāliḥ Bādhām never heard anything directly from Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنه.
Therefore, this chain is completely worthless and absolutely invalid. Only someone deprived of even the basics of knowledge would attempt to use it as proof.
