The Ahl al-Hadith Position on the Purity or Impurity of Semen with Evidences

The Purity or Impurity of Semen (Mani): The Ahl al-Hadith Position and Evidences

Taken from: Fatāwā ‘Ilmiyyah, Vol. 1 (Uṣūl, Takhrīj, and Ḥadīth Analysis, p. 679)

❖ The Question

The Barelvi and Deobandi scholars raise the objection:

“According to the Ahl al-Hadith, semen is pure (ṭāhir).”

The questioner wishes to know: What exactly is the stance of Ahl al-Hadith on this issue, and what are their evidences?

❖ The Answer

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger. To proceed:

Views of Scholars from Ahl al-Hadith, Hanbali, Shafi‘i, and Others

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī (رحمه الله) said:

"وَهُوَ (أي المني) طَاهِرٌ في أَشْهَرُ الرِّوَايَتَيْنِ"
Meaning: According to the most famous narration in the Hanbali madhhab, semen is pure.
(Ghuniyyat al-Ṭālibīn, p. 70)

Al-Insāf fī Ma‘rifat al-Rājiḥ min al-Khilāf (Hanbali reference):

"ومني الآدمي طاهر هذا المذهب مطلقا وعليه جماهير الاصحاب"
Meaning: According to the Hanbali madhhab, human semen is completely pure, and this is the opinion of the majority of Hanbali scholars.
(al-Insāf, vol. 1, pp. 340–341)

Imam al-Nawawī (رحمه الله):

"ذهب كثيرون إلى أن المني طاهر . روي ذلك عن علي بن أبي طالب وسعد بن أبي وقاص وابن عمر وعائشة وداود وأحمد في أصح الروايتين وهو مذهب الشافعي وأصحاب الحديث"
Meaning: Many scholars held that semen is pure. This is narrated from ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib, Sa‘d ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, Ibn ‘Umar, ‘Ā’ishah, Dāwūd al-Ẓāhirī, and from Imam Aḥmad in one of his narrations. This is also the madhhab of Imam al-Shāfi‘ī and the Ahl al-Hadith.
(Sharḥ Muslim, vol. 1, p. 140; al-Majmū‘, Kitāb al-Ṭahārah)

The Ahl al-Hadith Position

✿ Some Ahl al-Hadith scholars considered semen to be pure.
✿ Their view is supported by statements attributed to certain Companions, Tābi‘īn, and classical scholars.
✿ However, Imam al-Shawkānī, Nawab Siddīq Ḥasan Khān, and later Salafi researchers concluded that semen is impure (najis).
(Nayl al-Awṭār, vol. 1, p. 67; Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī, vol. 1, pp. 114–115; Mir‘āt Sharḥ Mishkāt, vol. 2, p. 196; Ghāyat al-Maqṣūd, vol. 1)

The Objection of Barelvi and Deobandi Scholars

✿ Their accusation that the Ahl al-Hadith unanimously hold semen to be pure is false propaganda.
✿ The issue has been a matter of scholarly difference since the time of the Companions and early scholars.
✿ To adopt one of the opinions based on evidence is not “a new madhhab.”

Ḥāfiẓ Zubair ‘Alī Zai (رحمه الله) on the Issue

✿ According to Imam al-Shawkānī and other Salafi researchers, semen is najis.
✿ Ḥāfiẓ Zubair ‘Alī Zai (رحمه الله) also inclined to this opinion.

Clarification

  • The phrase “jumhūr aṣḥāb” (majority of companions) in some texts refers specifically to Hanbali scholars and students of Imam Aḥmad, not to the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ in general.
  • The attributions to some Companions about semen being pure are not definitively established with authentic isnād.

❖ Conclusion

✿ The claim that all Ahl al-Hadith consider semen pure is false.
✿ The issue is ikhtilāfī (disputed among the scholars) since the early generations.
✿ Ahl al-Hadith scholars have adopted their positions based on hadith evidence and scholarly research.
✿ Accusing them of creating a new belief is slander and a result of blind partisanship.
