Narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The best number of companions is four, the best number for small battalions (sarāyā) is four hundred, and the best number for large armies (juyūsh) is four thousand. And twelve thousand fighters are never defeated due to small numbers.”

Narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما):
“The Prophet’s ﷺ flag (rāyah) was black, and his standard (liwāʾ) was white.”

During confrontations with the enemy, the Prophet ﷺ would arrange his armies in ranks. For instance, during the Battle of Uḥud, the Prophet ﷺ assigned archers to the mountain and commanded them to remain in their positions, even if they witnessed birds snatching away the Prophet ﷺ and his companions.

Narrated by Jābir (رضي الله عنه):
“The Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah while carrying a white banner.”

Narrated by Ḥārith ibn Ḥassān (رضي الله عنه):
“I saw black flags in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

It is reported that the Prophet’s ﷺ banner bore the inscription:
"لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ"

Imām al-Shawkānī (رحمه الله) classified it as weak in Nayl al-Awṭār: 4/706]
