➊ Virtue of Reciting the Shahadatayn After Wudu
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
(( أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ))
"I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and messenger."
❖ Whoever says this after performing wudu, all eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter from whichever gate he wishes.
☞ The narration in Abū Dāwūd (al-Ṭahārah, ḥadīth 171) which states that this supplication should be recited while looking up toward the sky is not authentic, because it contains a narrator — the cousin of Abū ‘Aqīl — whose identity is unknown, making the hadith unreliable.
☞ In Tirmidhī (ḥadīth 55), an additional supplication is recorded:
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ...
However, Imām Tirmidhī himself classified the narration as muḍṭarib, which is a category of weak hadith due to conflicting reports.
➋ The Du‘ā’: "Subḥānaka Allāhumma..."
"Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise. I bear witness that there is no true deity but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance."
✔ This du‘ā’ has been declared authentic by Imām Ḥākim, Ḥāfiẓ Dhahabī, and Ibn Ḥajar.
✔ It is also recited at the conclusion of gatherings, serving as a means of atonement for any unintended errors committed during the sitting.
➌ Self-Invented Supplications During Wudu
From the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, we are taught to say “Bismillāh” at the beginning of wudu and the Shahadatayn at the end.
However, some people today have innovated the practice of reciting specific supplications while washing each limb during wudu, as commonly found in prayer books.
❖ Ruling:
These limb-specific supplications are:
✘ Not established from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
✘ Not found in the practice of the noble Companions رضي الله عنهم
Allah ﷻ completed the religion upon His Messenger ﷺ. Therefore, it is not permissible for anyone to add or subtract from the religion.
✿ Statement of Imām Nawawī رحمه الله
“There is nothing authentically established from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding specific remembrances (adhkār) for each limb during wudu.”
Conclusion:
✔ The authentic Sunnah is:
- To say “Bismillāh” before beginning wudu.
- To recite the Shahadatayn after completing wudu.
- Optionally, to recite the du‘ā’ “Subḥānaka Allāhumma...” at the end.
✘ Any specific du‘ā’ for each limb is an innovation and should be avoided to remain within the bounds of authentic teachings.
