Sunnah Method of Sending Salutations (Durūd) During and After the Adhān

When hearing the words “Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan Rasūlullāh” in the Adhān, should one send Durūd (salutations) upon the Prophet ﷺ immediately at that moment?
Also, does the Durūd recited after the Adhān suffice, or must one recite it during the Adhān itself?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d!
✔ According to authentic aḥādīth, Durūd should be recited after the Adhān.
❖ As for reciting Durūd during the Adhān, especially upon hearing the words “Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan Rasūlullāh”, there is no authentic ḥadīth to support this practice to the best of our knowledge.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When you hear the Adhān, repeat what the mu’adhdhin says, then send blessings upon me.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, ḥadīth 385)
This shows that first, one should repeat the words of the Adhān, and then send Durūd after the Adhān ends.
As recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī:
When the words “Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan Rasūlullāh” were heard during the Adhān, Mu‘āwiyah (رضي الله عنه) would simply repeat those same words, and then recite Durūd after the Adhān.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ḥadīth 612)
✔ It is not Sunnah to recite Durūd upon hearing “Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan Rasūlullāh” during the Adhān.
✔ One should repeat the words of the mu’adhdhin exactly as they are.
✔ After the Adhān concludes, it is proven and preferred (afḍal) to recite Durūd upon the Prophet ﷺ.
