Source: Fatawa of the Scholars of Hadith, Volume 09

❖ Question

What is Āseeb (spiritual possession)? How do jinn influence humans? Which verses and Hadiths should be recited for protection from their effects? What is the reality of Shari‘ah-approved amulets, and how do some practitioners claim to imprison jinn?

❖ Answer

➊ Definition of Āseeb (Spiritual Possession)

Āseeb refers to being affected by jinn or spiritual entities. When a person comes under the influence of jinn, they are referred to as "Āseeb-zadah" (possessed).

➋ Can Jinn Affect Humans?

Yes, jinn can affect humans under certain circumstances. Some common causes include:

Neglecting the remembrance of Allah (dhikr)
Entering unprotected or secluded places
Engaging in sinful or satanic acts

➌ Treatment for Possession by Jinn

Reciting specific Qur'anic verses is beneficial for treating those affected by jinn. These include:

Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah: 255):
"اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ…"

Al-Mu‘awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas)

Recitation of Surah Al-Baqarah, as the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Shayatin flee from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited." (Muslim)

➍ Reality of Shari‘ah-Approved Amulets

Amulets (Taweez), even if they are based on verses of the Qur'an or words from Hadith, are not proven from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Hence, they should be used with caution and only after consulting knowledgeable scholars.

➎Claims of Imprisoning Jinn

Some spiritual healers claim to have the ability to capture or imprison jinn, but there is no authentic Islamic evidence for such practices. These claims must be approached with research and caution.
