The Connection of Soul and Body in the Grave and Barzakh: Punishment and Comfort
Source: Fatāwā ʿUlamāʾ al-Ḥadīth
Question
It is said that when a deceased is buried, the soul is returned to the body for questioning. The question arises: After the questioning, does the soul remain in the body or not? If it does not remain in the body, then where does it go? And when comfort or punishment occurs in the grave, is the soul inside the body, or does it merely have some connection with the body? Or is it that the soul and the body are given separate punishment or comfort?
Answer
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!
Reward and punishment in the grave and Barzakh are experienced by both the body and the soul.
The state of the grave and Barzakh is a reality that lies beyond our comprehension and understanding.
