❖ The Question
Is sleeping with one’s face towards the Qiblah proven from ḥadīth, or may a person sleep facing any direction?
Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh. Ammā ba‘d:
Sleeping on the right side is proven by authentic aḥādīth. Examples include:
- Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Wuḍū’, Bāb Faḍl Man Bāta ‘Alā Wuḍū’, ḥadīth no. 247
- Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Dhikr wa-al-Du‘ā’, Bāb al-Du‘ā’ ‘Inda al-Nawm, ḥadīth no. 2710
However, to my knowledge, no authentic ḥadīth mentions sleeping specifically facing the Qiblah.
Therefore, both sleeping facing the Qiblah and not facing it are permissible.
