Monthly al-Ḥadīth, Hazro
Translation:
“And (remember) when We made the House (the Kaʿbah) a place of return and safety for the people and (commanded), ‘Take the Maqām Ibrāhīm as a place of prayer.’ And We entrusted Ibrāhīm and Ismāʿīl (peace be upon them) (saying), ‘Purify My House for those who perform ṭawāf, those who stay (for worship), and those who bow and prostrate.”
(al-Baqarah: 125)
➊ Meaning of Maqām:
“Mashābih” refers to a place that people visit repeatedly.
ʿAṭā’ ibn Abī Rabāḥ (may Allāh have mercy upon him) said:
“People from every place will come here repeatedly and will not become independent of it.”
(Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī, 420/1; chain is authentic)
➋ Practice of the Prophet ﷺ:
Sayyidunā Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh al-Anṣārī (may Allāh be pleased with him) reported:
“After performing ṭawāf, the Prophet ﷺ prayed two rakʿahs facing Maqām Ibrāhīm, reciting Sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ in the first rakʿah and Sūrah al-Kāfirūn in the second.”
(Saḥīḥ Muslim: 1218, summarized)
➌ Sayyidunā ʿUmar’s (may Allāh be pleased with him) Role:
Sayyidunā ʿUmar (may Allāh be pleased with him) said:
“Three of my statements were affirmed by my Lord through revelation, one of which was when I said:
‘O Messenger of Allāh! Make Maqām Ibrāhīm a place of prayer.’
(Saḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 4483)
Thus, this verse was revealed confirming his suggestion.
➍ Description of Maqām Ibrāhīm:
Maqām Ibrāhīm is the stone upon which Sayyidunā Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) stood while building the Kaʿbah. It is located near the Kaʿbah’s courtyard and is preserved within a small, dome-shaped glass structure.
After completing the ṭawāf of ʿUmrah or Ḥajj, it is prescribed to offer two rakʿahs of prayer here.
✔ In times of crowding, it is permissible to pray a little farther back to avoid causing hardship to others.
➎ Two Meanings of Keeping the House Pure:
◈ First:
To maintain it physically clean and ensure the provision of amenities like lighting, etc. In our times, there is an excellent system in place for the cleanliness and convenience of the visitors of Baytullāh and al-Masjid al-Nabawī. Both are also kept free from shirk (polytheism) and innovations.
◈ Second:
To keep it free from shirk, kufr, idols, polytheistic practices, and innovations.
This verse also alludes to the obligation of keeping the mosques pure and clean, which is a highly meritorious deed.
