Sign of the Day of Judgment: The Descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) in the Light of the Quran
The command of the Almighty Allah is:
He (Jesus, peace be upon him) is only a servant upon whom We have bestowed favor, and We made him a sign for the Children of Israel. And if We willed, We could have made angels successors upon the earth instead of you. And indeed, he (Jesus, peace be upon him) is a sign of the Hour, so do not doubt the Hour; but follow Me. This is a straight path.
Reference: (Surah Az-Zukhruf: 59 to 61)
The chief of the commentators, Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), in the interpretation of the mentioned verse says:
وَأَنَّهُ لَعِلْمٌ لِّلسَّاعَةِ قال هو خروج عيسى بن مريم عليه السلام قبل يوم القيامة
“Indeed, he is a sign of the Hour. That is, Prophet Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon him) will appear before the Hour.”
Reference: Ahmad (329/4)
And because of their (the Jews') statement that "We have killed the Messenger of Allah, Messiah Jesus son of Mary," while they did not kill him nor crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them. Indeed, those who differ about it are in doubt. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for Allah raised him up to Himself. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. Not one of the People of the Scripture but will believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.

The Descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) in the Light of Hadiths:
عن أبى هريرة رضى الله عنه عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : لا تقوم الساعة حتى ينزل فيكم ابن مريم حكما مقسطا فيكسر الصليب ويقتل الخنزير ويضع الجزية ويفيض المال حتى لا يقبله أحد
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The Day of Judgment will not be established until Jesus, the son of Mary, descends among you as a just ruler. He will break the cross, kill the pig, abolish the jizya (and war), and then wealth will become abundant to the extent that there will be no one to accept it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: How good will your fate be when Jesus, the son of Mary, descends among you and your leader at that time will be from among yourselves. (That is, Imam Mahdi)

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: By the One in Whose hand is my soul, surely the son of Mary will descend among you as a just ruler. Then he will break the cross, kill the pig, stop the jizya (and war), then wealth and riches will become so abundant that no one will be willing to accept it. The condition will be such that performing one prostration will be better than the whole world and everything in it. Then Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you wish, you may recite this verse: "And none of the People of the Book will remain without believing in him before his death."

Attribute and Place of Descent of Jesus (peace be upon him):
It is narrated from Hazrat Nawas bin Samaan (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Then Allah Almighty will send Hazrat Isa Masih son of Maryam, and he will descend in the eastern part of Damascus (Sham), near the white minaret, dressed in two yellow garments, with his hands placed on the wings of two angels. When he lowers his head, it will seem as if drops are falling, and when he raises his head, the drops will appear like pearls falling. The breath of his exhalation will not leave any disbeliever alive, and his breath will reach as far as the horizon. Then Ibn Maryam will pursue the Dajjal and catch him at the gate of Ludd (a place in Palestine) and kill him.

Time of Descent of Jesus (peace be upon him):
عن جابر بن عبد الله رضى الله عنه يقول سمعت النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول : لا تزال طائفة من أمتي يقاتلون على الحق ظاهرين إلى يوم القيامة ، قال : فينزل عيسى بن مريم فيقول أميرهم : تعال صل لنا ، فيقول : لا ، إن بعضكم على بعض أمراء تكرمة الله هذه الأمة
It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: A group from my Ummah will continue to fight on the truth until the Day of Judgment. Then Jesus (peace be upon him) will descend, and the leader (Mahdi) of those Muslims will say, "Come, let us lead the prayer." He (Jesus) will refuse and say, "The leader will be from among you." This is a favor from Allah upon this Ummah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Jesus son of Mary will descend at dawn, and the leader of the Muslims will say, "O Spirit of Allah! Come, lead the prayer." Jesus (peace be upon him) will say, "The members of this Ummah are leaders over one another." Then their leader (Imam Mahdi) will lead the prayer.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: I was sleeping (in a dream) and performing Tawaf of the Kaaba when I saw a man who was wheat-colored and his hair was straight as if water was dripping from it (but when I looked closely) I asked, "Who is this?" People said: This is Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary) (peace be upon him).

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: There is no prophet between me and him (meaning Isa, Jesus, peace be upon him), and indeed he will descend. So when you see him, recognize him as a man of medium height, with a reddish-white complexion, wearing two yellow garments. His hair will be such that it appears as if water is dripping from it, although he will not be wet. He will fight the people on the religion of Islam, and Allah will eliminate all religions except Islam during his time. He will kill the false Messiah (Dajjal), and then there will be peace and security all over the earth.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Then he (Jesus, peace be upon him) will break the cross, kill the pig, abolish the Jizya (i.e., Islam or war), and suspend all religions until Allah Almighty eradicates all religions except Islam.

Then Hazrat Isa (AS) and his companions will pray to Allah, and Allah will send birds with necks like those of Bactrian camels, which will carry them and throw them where Allah commands. Then Allah will send rain that will reach every house made of soil and tents, and through it Allah will purify the earth as if it were a pond or a garden. Then the earth will be commanded to grow its fruits and produce blessings; on that day one pomegranate will suffice a whole group, and its peel will provide shade. The milk of a blessed she-camel will suffice many groups, the milk of a pregnant cow will suffice a tribe, and the milk of a goat will suffice a family. People will be in such a state that suddenly Allah will send a wind that will pass under their armpits and take the soul of every believer and Muslim, leaving only the worst people who will quarrel like vultures, and the Day of Judgment will be established upon them.

Then people will live for seven years until there will be no enmity even between two persons. Then Allah Almighty will send a cool breeze from the direction of Sham (Syria) which will take the soul of every person whose heart contains even the smallest amount of goodness or faith. And if anyone hides in a mountain cave, this breeze will reach there and take his soul.

The Death of Jesus (peace be upon him) and His Funeral and Burial:

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Then he (Jesus, peace be upon him) will remain on the earth for as long as Allah wills, then he will pass away, and the Muslims will perform his funeral prayer and bury him.

Benefits:
➊ The descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) is one of the last few major signs of the Day of Judgment, which has not yet occurred.
➋ Jesus (peace be upon him) was taken up alive to the heavens as "a soul with a body," and before the Day of Judgment, he will be sent down alive in the same manner.
➌ The Holy Quran explicitly mentions his being taken up to the heavens and also refers to him as a sign of the Day of Judgment.
"They are a sign of the Hour."
Reference: (Az-Zukhruf: 61)
Because Jesus (peace be upon him) will be sent down before the Day of Judgment to confront the Dajjal.
Reference: (Tafsir al-Tabari 204/11, Ibn Kathir 4/201)
➍ At the time of the descent of Jesus (peace be upon him), all Christians will believe in him and accept Islam, and those who do not accept Islam will face destruction.
➎ The descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) is proven by numerous authentic hadiths, so it is necessary to believe in this fact without any doubt.
Reference: (Majmu' al-Fatawa 3/291)
➏ The ascension and descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) may seem against reason, but it is not impossible for Divine Power to take a servant alive from the earth, keep him alive for thousands of years somewhere, and then send him down to the earth again in the same state. Therefore, abandoning reason in favor of Divine Revelation is true Islam.
➐ When Jesus (peace be upon him) was taken up to the heavens, he was a prophet, but before the Day of Judgment, he will come as a follower and companion of the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (peace be upon him), not as a permanent prophet. Therefore, Hafiz al-Dhahabi (may Allah have mercy on him) included him in the list of the Companions.
➑ Jesus (peace be upon him) will descend after the emergence of the Dajjal and the appearance of the Mahdi.
➒ Jesus (peace be upon him) will descend at the time of a prayer, and the most probable opinion is that it will be the Fajr prayer because some hadiths indicate this, although there is some difference in the chain of narration.
➓ Jesus (peace be upon him) will descend near the white minaret on the eastern side of Damascus, placing his arms on the wings of two angels. Hafiz Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) states that this is the white stone minaret of the Umayyad Mosque, which was built in 741 AH with the wealth of Christians because they had martyred him, and this is clear evidence of the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him).

⓫ Jesus (peace be upon him) will pray behind Imam Mahdi.
⓬ The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described some signs of Jesus (peace be upon him) for the guidance of his Ummah, which upon seeing, every Muslim and even every Christian will believe in him. Some of these signs are:
◈ He will descend from the sky supported by angels.
◈ He will be dressed in two yellow garments.
◈ Drops will appear to be dripping from his hair, although it will be dry.
◈ His complexion will be wheatish, between red and white.
◈ He will be of medium height.
◈ He will kill the Dajjal by splitting him into two pieces.
◈ He will establish peace, security, justice, and fairness on earth.
◈ He will kill the pig, which Christians consider lawful.
◈ He will break the cross, meaning he will end Christianity because the descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) is essentially the refutation of Christian beliefs.
◈ Wherever his breath reaches, disbelievers will be destroyed, and his breath will reach as far as his sight goes.
⓭ Jesus (peace be upon him) will join Muslims in Jihad against the disbelievers and the Dajjal and will annihilate all disbelievers including the Great Dajjal because he will end the jizya (tribute) as predicted by the Prophet (peace be upon him). Disbelievers will have only two options: Islam or war, and those who come to the battlefield will be killed.
⓮ After the descent of Jesus (peace be upon him), disbelievers will be completely eliminated, peace and security will prevail everywhere, and only one religion (Islam) will govern. There will be abundance of wealth and the descent of mercy and blessings.
⓯ Lions, cows, sheep, wolves, cheetahs, goats will all drink water from the same place and graze together, and their nature will change so they will not harm each other. Even snakes and dragons will not harm children playing with them.
⓰ After the destruction of the Dajjal and disbelievers, only Muslims will inherit the earth, and they will be so steadfast in faith and characterized by such morals and manners that there will be no envy, hatred, or animosity even between two Muslims.
⓱ Jesus (peace be upon him) will perform Hajj and Umrah, and this prophecy was not fulfilled in his first life, so after his second descent, he will be honored with Hajj and Umrah.
⓲ The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sent greetings to Jesus (peace be upon him) through every Muslim who meets him.
⓳ According to some narrations, Jesus (peace be upon him) will stay on earth for forty (40) years, and according to others, for seven (7) years.
Hafiz Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) resolves this contradiction by writing that Jesus (peace be upon him) will reside on earth for a total of forty (40) years from birth to death, of which thirty-three (33) years he spent before being taken up to the heavens, and the remaining seven (7) years he will complete after his descent before the Day of Judgment.
(20) Jesus (peace be upon him) will pass away after his second descent, and Muslims will perform his funeral prayer and bury him.

The Blessed Grave of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him):
Hazrat Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) says that it is written in the Torah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) that Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) will be buried alongside the grave of the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
