Sayyidunā Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما was also asked regarding Ḥajj al-Tamattuʿ. He declared it a Sunnah. People said: "But your father prohibited it!"
He replied: "The Sharīʿah was revealed upon Muhammad ﷺ, not upon my father."
Is this statement correct?
In response to the previous question, it was concisely clarified that no one is to be obeyed in opposition to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. Indeed, obedience to the Messenger ﷺ is, in fact, obedience to Allah, for he conveys the divine message and revelation to the people.
The narration attributed to Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما reflects the same principle.
Imām Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī reports from Sālim bin ʿAbdullāh bin ʿUmar that he heard a man from Shām questioning ʿAbdullāh bin ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما about Ḥajj al-Tamattuʿ. Ibn ʿUmar replied:
"It is permissible (ḥalāl)."
The man from Shām said: "But your father forbade it."
Ibn ʿUmar responded:
"Tell me: if my father prohibited it, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Ḥajj al-Tamattuʿ, then should we follow the command of my father, or the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"

Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Ḥajj (Hadith: 864)
Musnad Aḥmad (Vol. 2, p. 95, Hadith: 5700)
Bayhaqī (Vol. 5, p. 21)
The essence of this ḥadīth is that no statement of any individual from the Ummah, no matter how virtuous or esteemed they may be, can be accepted in opposition to the Sunnah and Aḥādīth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for none can surpass the status of the Prophet ﷺ.
Therefore:
✔ Unconditional obedience is due only to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ—this is obligatory (farḍ and wājib).
✔ Any other opinion is acceptable only if it aligns with the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ; otherwise, it is to be rejected.
