❖ Question: Should the Person Who Gives Adhān Also Give Iqāmah?
❖ Relevant Hadiths and Their Analysis
① Hadith of Ziyād ibn Ḥārith al-Ṣudāʾī (RA):
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever gives the Adhān should also give the Iqāmah."
(Weak: Ḍaʿīf Abū Dāwūd 102, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh: Chapter on One Person Giving Adhān and Another Giving Iqāmah; also in: Abū Dāwūd 514, Aḥmad 4/169, al-Tirmidhī 199, Ibn Mājah 717, al-Bayhaqī 39931, Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ 1377, al-Ḍaʿīfah 35)
② Hadith of ʿAbdullāh ibn Zayd (RA):
ʿAbdullāh ibn Zayd (RA), who saw the Adhān in a dream, expressed his wish to be appointed as a Mu’adhdhin. The Prophet ﷺ replied:
"Then you should give the Iqāmah."
(Weak: Ḍaʿīf Abū Dāwūd 100; also in: Abū Dāwūd 512, al-Bayhaqī 1/399, Aḥmad 4/42. The chain includes Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Wāqiʿī, who is weak — see Tahdhīb al-Kamāl 26/221, Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb 2/196, al-Kāmil 3/79)
❖ Combined Analysis of Both Hadiths
- The first Hadith suggests that the person who gives the Adhān should also give the Iqāmah, but it is weak in narration.
- The second Hadith indicates that someone other than the Mu’adhdhin can give the Iqāmah, but it too is weak.
❖ Therefore, since both narrations are weak, the matter returns to the principle of permissibility (ibāḥah) in Sharīʿah.

❖ View of Scholars
✔ Ḥāfiẓ al-Ḥāzmī (RA):
The scholars are unanimous in agreeing that it is permissible for Adhān and Iqāmah to be given by different individuals.
(Al-Iʿtibār, pp. 195–196)
❖ Juristic Opinions on What is Preferable
- Imām Mālik (RA), Imām Abū Ḥanīfah (RA):
No preference—no difference between the two, and neither is more virtuous. - Imām al-Shāfiʿī (RA), Imām Aḥmad (RA):
Preferable for the one who gives Adhān to also give Iqāmah based on the apparent meaning of the Hadith:
“Whoever gives Adhān, he should give Iqāmah.”
(Sharḥ al-Muhadhdhab 3/129, al-Khurshī 1/235, al-Mughnī 2/71, Nayl al-Awṭār 1/525, Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī 1/622)
❖ Preferred (Rājiḥ) Opinion
Since both Hadiths are weak, both practices are acceptable. However, for the sake of order and discipline, it is better that the one who calls Adhān should also give the Iqāmah.
✔ Imām al-Shawkānī (RA):
Prefers that the Mu’adhdhin also gives the Iqāmah.
(Nayl al-Awṭār 1/525)
✔ ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Mubārakpūrī (RA):
Supports this view.
(Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī 1/623)
✔ Amīr al-Ṣanʿānī (RA):
Also favors this opinion.
(Subul al-Salām 1/180)
❖ Conclusion
➊ It is permissible for someone other than the Mu’adhdhin to give the Iqāmah.
➋ There is no sin or invalidity in separating the two roles.
➌ However, based on practicality and organization, it is preferable that the same person gives both Adhān and Iqāmah, as supported by various scholars.
