Should One Respond to One or Multiple Calls to Adhan?

❖ Responding to One Mu’adhdhin or to All Heard Mu’adhdhins ❖

◈ Should One Respond to a Single Mu’adhdhin or to Every Adhan Heard?

This issue has also been a subject of difference of opinion among the Salaf (early generations).

➤ View: Responding Only to the First Mu’adhdhin

Some scholars held the view that one should respond only to the first Adhan heard. Their reasoning is based on the fact that the command found in Hadith does not necessitate repetition.

Implication of their argument:
If repetition were not required at all, then it would lead to the conclusion that responding once in a lifetime would be sufficient — which is clearly not intended.

➤ Preferred Practice

According to our understanding, a person should respond to the Adhan of the Mu’adhdhin whom he hears first.
It is not necessary to respond to every Mu’adhdhin whose Adhan is heard thereafter.
