❖ Should the Mu’adhdhin Say Hayya ‘ala al-Salah and Hayya ‘ala al-Falah on a Rainy Day?

❖ Question:
On a rainy day, should the Mu’adhdhin say Hayya ‘ala al-Salah and Hayya ‘ala al-Falah in the Adhan?
❖ Answer:
On a rainy day, the Mu’adhdhin should not say the usual phrases:
- "حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ"
- "حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ"
Instead, he should replace them with any of the following phrases:
- "أَلا صَلُّوا فِي الرِّحَالِ"
- "أَلا صَلُّوا فِي رِحَالِكُمْ"
- "الصَّلَاةُ فِي الرِّحَالِ"
- "أَلا صَلُّوا فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ"
These phrases instruct people to pray in their homes and are used to ease hardship during difficult weather conditions such as rain, mud, and slipperiness.
Evidence from Hadith:
❀ ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (رضي الله عنه) instructed his Mu’adhdhin on a rainy day:
"When you say: أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، أشهد أن محمداً رسول الله — do not say: حي على الصلاة, rather say: صلوا في بيوتكم."
The people found this surprising, so he explained:
"Are you surprised by this? One who is better than me (i.e., the Prophet ﷺ) did this. Though Jumu‘ah is obligatory, I disliked putting you in hardship, having you walk in mud and slippery ground."

❖ Key Points from the Hadith:
✔ This was not only permitted but practiced by the Prophet ﷺ.
✔ Even Jumu‘ah, which is normally obligatory, could be excused due to difficulty.
✔ The instruction was given before saying “Hayya ‘ala al-Salah”, indicating replacement, not addition.
❖ Conclusion:
✔ On rainy days, the Mu’adhdhin should omit Hayya ‘ala al-Salah and Hayya ‘ala al-Falah.
✔ Instead, he should announce:
❝ Pray in your homes ❞ — using any of the prescribed phrases.
✔ This is established from authentic narrations and is a mercy and ease provided by the Shari‘ah.
✔ Key Point:
🌧 Replacing “Hayya ‘ala al-Salah” with “Sallu fi Buyutikum” during rain is a Sunnah practice, proven from the Prophet ﷺ and his noble Companions.
