Ruling and Virtue of Shortening Salah During Travel
✍ Fatwa by: Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh
Is shortening the prayers (قصر نماز) during travel only a permissible concession (rukhṣah) or is it more virtuous (afḍal) to act upon it?
✦ Performing qaṣr (shortened prayer) while traveling is a rukhṣah (concession) by scholarly consensus — it is not an ʿazīmah (strict obligation).
✦ However, acting upon this rukhṣah is considered better and more virtuous.
✔ That is to say, while a traveler has the option to pray the full or shortened version, it is preferable to pray in the shortened form, in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
– Qaṣr prayer is a concession, not a compulsory act.
– Adopting the concession is more rewarding and closer to the Sunnah.
– Thus, the traveler should prefer qaṣr unless there is a compelling reason not to.
