Question

Is it permissible to walk quickly to catch a rak‘ah with the imam during congregational prayer? Please provide guidance from the fatwa. May Allah protect and safeguard you.

Answer

Alhamdulillah, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d!

When you enter the mosque and the imam is in the state of rukū‘, you should not rush or act hastily. You must enter the mosque with calmness and dignity, and you should not begin the prayer before reaching the row.

A clear example is the incident of Abu Bakr (RA):
On one occasion, when he came quickly to catch a rak‘ah with the imam (the Prophet ﷺ) and started the prayer before reaching the row, the Prophet ﷺ said to him:

«زَادَکَ اللّٰهُ حِرْصًا وَلاَ تَعُدْ»
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Adhan, Bab Idha Raka‘a Duna al-Saff, Hadith 783)
"May Allah increase your eagerness, but do not do this again."

This hadith is clear evidence that even in the desire to attain the virtue of congregational prayer and catch a rak‘ah, Shariah commands calmness, dignity, and adherence to proper order.
