Ruling on Urine Drops During Salah – Wudu and Leading Prayer
Source: Fatawa ‘Ilmiyyah (Tawdih al-Ahkam)
If a person sometimes feels wetness during Salah and suspects that some drops of urine may have come out, and later finds a stain:
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!
If a person has a constant issue of urine drops or wind release, the scholars agree:
She complained to the Prophet ﷺ about continuous bleeding and asked if she should stop praying.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“This is not menstruation; it is from a vein. During your usual menstrual days, stop praying, but when those days end, wash and pray.”
He ﷺ also said:
“Then make wudu for every prayer.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 228)
Just like a woman in istihadhah, a person with constant urine drops:
Treatment is strongly encouraged to cure or lessen the condition.
Conclusion:
ھذا ما عندي واللہ أعلم بالصواب

❖ Question
If a person sometimes feels wetness during Salah and suspects that some drops of urine may have come out, and later finds a stain:
- Should he immediately break his prayer, perform wudu again, and restart Salah?
- Or should he complete the prayer and then repeat it afterwards?
- Sometimes this happens even right after making wudu, which is especially difficult in winter.
- What if drops come out during prayer — should he stop or continue?
- Can such a person lead the prayer?
❖ Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!
1. Ruling for Frequent Urine or Wind Release
If a person has a constant issue of urine drops or wind release, the scholars agree:
- He should make a fresh wudu for every prayer time.
- With that wudu, he may pray one obligatory prayer (whether on time or qada) and its sunnah prayers.
Evidence – Case of Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh (RA)
She complained to the Prophet ﷺ about continuous bleeding and asked if she should stop praying.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“This is not menstruation; it is from a vein. During your usual menstrual days, stop praying, but when those days end, wash and pray.”
He ﷺ also said:
“Then make wudu for every prayer.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 228)
2. Analogy for Urine Drops
Just like a woman in istihadhah, a person with constant urine drops:
- Makes wudu for each prayer time.
- May wear undergarments to prevent soiling clothes.
- If certain that no drops will come during prayer, he may remove them; otherwise, keep them on.
3. Medical Treatment
Treatment is strongly encouraged to cure or lessen the condition.
4. Leading the Prayer (Imamah)
- If the condition meets the Shari‘ah definition of ma‘dhur (excused) — meaning the entire prayer time passes without purity — he can lead the prayer.
- However:
- It is better for him to lead only those with the same excuse.
- If healthy people pray behind him, their prayer is valid, but it is preferable that a healthy person be the regular imam.
5. If Drops Come During Salah
- If not ma‘dhur: Salah becomes invalid; he must stop, perform wudu, and restart.
- If ma‘dhur: His prayer remains valid, even if drops come during it, provided he made wudu after the prayer time began.
Conclusion:
- Non-ma‘dhur: break prayer if drops come, renew wudu, and repeat Salah.
- Ma‘dhur: one wudu per prayer time is sufficient; may continue Salah if drops come.
- Imamah: permissible but healthier person preferred.
