Ruling on Disrespecting the Companions (Ṣaḥābah) and Its Severe Consequences

What is the Islamic ruling on insulting or disrespecting the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ? Does such a person exit the fold of Islam?
➊ General Ruling on Disrespecting the Ṣaḥābah
Scholars have expressed varying opinions regarding one who insults or curses one or a few Companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
Such a person is generally regarded as a:- Fāsiq (open sinner)
- Fājir (wicked person)
However, scholars do not declare such a person a disbeliever (kāfir) in all cases.➋ Ruling on General Disrespect and Cursing of the Companions
If a person:
- Curses the Ṣaḥābah collectively
- Rejects their faith and justice entirely
- Declares all or most of them as disbelievers (takfīr)
Then, such an individual has been declared a kāfir by many scholars.Why?
Because these beliefs often contradict core tenets of Islam and involve denial of matters proven by the Qur’an.
➌ Specific Forms of Disrespect That Constitute Kufr (Disbelief)
A person is unanimously considered a disbeliever if they do any of the following:
❖ Declare any Companion a disbeliever (kāfir)
❖ Accuse the Companions of dishonesty or treachery, rejecting their trustworthiness and integrity
❖ Insult the honour of ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها), despite the Qur'an affirming her purity:
This is a denial of a clear Qur’anic ruling, which is disbelief.
➍ Additional Dimensions of Insulting the Companions
✿ An Attack on the Sharīʿah
The Companions are the first and foremost transmitters of Islamic law.
Insulting them undermines trust in the entire religion.
✿ An Attack on the Prophet ﷺ Himself
Criticising the Companions implies criticism of the Prophet’s ﷺ companionship, training, and selection.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"A man follows the religion of his close friend, so let one of you look carefully at whom he befriends."
(Sunan Abu Dawud: 4833, Tirmidhi: 2378)
If the Companions were evil (naʿūdhu billāh), then the Prophet ﷺ would be blamed for befriending and trusting them—a clearly deviant belief.✿ An Attack on Allah’s Wisdom and Decree
To slander the Companions is to suggest that (naʿūdhu billāh) Allah chose unworthy individuals to accompany His Final Messenger ﷺ.
This amounts to objecting to Allah’s wisdom and divine decree, which is misguidance and deviation.
