What is the ruling regarding a woman who performs wudu while wearing artificial nails or nail polish?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd!
For a woman who prays, the use of artificial nails or nail polish is not permissible because:
Evidence from the Qur’an:
﴿فَاغسِلوا وُجوهَكُم وَأَيدِيَكُم﴾ (Surah al-Ma’idah: 6)
“…wash your faces and your hands…”
If nail polish or artificial nails prevent water from reaching the hands, then the act of washing the hands is incomplete — meaning one of the fara’id (obligatory acts) of wudu or ghusl is left out.
If she is in a state where prayer is not obligatory, such as during menstruation, there is no harm in using them unless:
Some claim that artificial nails and nail polish are similar to khuffs (leather socks) and that a woman can “wipe” over them for a set duration.
Others compare them to the turban (ʿimāmah) — this is also invalid because:
The Prophet ﷺ did not even permit wiping over gloves, despite them covering the hands — showing that anything preventing water from reaching an obligatory washing area is not allowed.
A Muslim should:
ھذا ما عندي واللہ أعلم بالصواب
Question:
What is the ruling regarding a woman who performs wudu while wearing artificial nails or nail polish?
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd!
For a woman who prays, the use of artificial nails or nail polish is not permissible because:
- These form a barrier preventing water from reaching the skin or nails during wudu or ghusl.
- Any substance that prevents water from reaching the required body parts invalidates the act of purification.
If a Woman is Not Praying:
If she is in a state where prayer is not obligatory, such as during menstruation, there is no harm in using them unless:
- It imitates non-Muslim women’s practices in a way forbidden in Shari‘ah — in which case it is still impermissible.
Refutation of Incorrect Fatwas:
Some claim that artificial nails and nail polish are similar to khuffs (leather socks) and that a woman can “wipe” over them for a set duration.
- This analogy is false because not every covering of the body can be compared to khuffs.
- Wiping over khuffs is a specific concession given for the feet due to:
- The need for protection against cold.
- Direct contact with the ground.
- Shari‘ah has not extended such concessions to the hands or other body parts.
Others compare them to the turban (ʿimāmah) — this is also invalid because:
- For the head, the obligation is wiping (masah), not washing.
- For the hands, washing is obligatory, so any covering that blocks water invalidates the washing.
The Prophet ﷺ did not even permit wiping over gloves, despite them covering the hands — showing that anything preventing water from reaching an obligatory washing area is not allowed.
Guidance for Giving Fatwas:
A Muslim should:
- Strive to seek the truth.
- Avoid issuing fatwas unless certain it is obligatory for him to speak.
- Remember that fatwa-giving is, in reality, representing the Shari‘ah of Allah ﷻ, and accountability before Him is great.
