Shar‘i Ruling on Ghusl for Madhy Discharge and Its Purification Method

Ruling on Ghusl in the Case of Madhy Discharge – Is Ghusl Obligatory?

Source:
Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah (Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām)

Question:

If a girl sees an obscene picture and, as a result, a sticky fluid is discharged, is ghusl (ritual bath) obligatory upon her?

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

  • The fluid discharged due to bad thoughts, obscene images, or immoral temptations is called madhy.
  • The discharge of madhy does not make clothes impure in a way that requires complete washing of the whole garment, nor does it make ghusl obligatory.
  • In such a case, only istinjāʾ (washing the private parts) and wuḍūʾ are required.
