Ruling on Doubtful Blood Related to Menstruation and Istihādah: Shar‘i Principles
This article is derived from the book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, based on the fatwas of the scholars of the Two Holy Sanctuaries, translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.
Question:
When a woman experiences blood discharge and is unable to determine whether it is menstrual blood (ḥayḍ), blood of istihāḍah, or some other type of blood, how should she classify it?
✔ Answer:
The basic principle regarding blood discharged from a woman is that it is considered menstrual blood, unless it becomes clear that it is istihāḍah (non-menstrual bleeding).
Therefore, as long as it is not clearly known to be istihāḍah, the woman should regard it as ḥayḍ (menstruation).
