Sharʿi Ruling on Abusing the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and Its Consequences

What is the ruling on someone who abuses the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿAmma Baʿd!
The Companions (Ṣaḥābah) رضي الله عنهم, after the Prophets عليهم السلام, are the most virtuous, honored, and beloved servants of Allah ﷻ. Allah chose them for the companionship of His Prophet ﷺ and supported Islam through them.
Whatever form of Islam we have today in its preserved state is the fruit of their unmatched sacrifices and efforts. To dishonor or insult them is in reality an attack on the very foundations of Islam.
✿ Statement of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (رحمه الله)
- We must love all the Companions رضي الله عنهم, respect them, and protect their honor.
- If any disputes occurred among them, we must remain silent regarding those matters.
- Whoever abuses the Companions is a hypocrite, for none has the audacity to insult them except one drowned in hypocrisy (al-ʿiyādh billāh).
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"خَيْرُ النَّاسِ قَرْنِي ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ"
“The best of people are those of my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them.”
And he ﷺ said:
"لا تسبوا أصحابي"
“Do not abuse my Companions.”
✿ Abusing the Companions = Attack on Religion, Shariʿah, and Prophethood
➊ Attack on the Companions themselves:
Directly insulting them is clearly ḥarām.
➋ Attack on Shariʿah:
Since the entire religion was conveyed to us through the Companions, labeling them as unreliable would make people doubt the Shariʿah itself. Deviant sects even declare great Companions like Abū Bakr and ʿUmar (RA) to be sinful or disbelievers — a heinous blasphemy.
➌ Attack on the Messenger ﷺ:
If those who kept company with the Prophet ﷺ are considered (al-ʿiyādh billāh) sinful or corrupt, this reflects badly upon the Messenger ﷺ himself, for a person is known by his companions.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"المرء على دين خليله فلينظر أحدكم من يخالل"
“A person is upon the religion of his close friend, so let one of you see whom he befriends.”
➍ Attack on Allah’s Wisdom:
Claiming that Allah ﷻ chose sinful or disbelieving people for the Prophet’s companionship implies a flaw in Allah’s wisdom — an unthinkable notion.
✿ Fatwa of Shaykh Ibn Bāz (رحمه الله)
- Abusing the Companions is among the major sins.
- At times, it even reaches the level of apostasy (irtidād).
- Whoever insults them, harbors hatred against them, or believes them to be sinful is a disbeliever.
- The Companions are the carriers of the Qur’an, Sunnah, and revelation. To oppose them is to oppose Islam itself.
❖ Conclusion
Abusing the Companions رضي الله عنهم is a grave sin, at times amounting to disbelief. Loving, respecting, and defending their honor is an essential part of faith.
