❀ Question
How severe a sin is masturbation (self-stimulation), and what is its punishment in Islam?
❀ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
◈ Qur’ānic Evidence of Prohibition
Allah Taʿālā says:
— Al-Maʿārij: 30–31
Translation:
"Except with their wives or those their right hands possess — for then they are free from blame. But whoever seeks beyond that — it is they who are the transgressors.”
These verses are a clear proof that the private parts may only be used through lawful means (i.e., with one’s wife or in Sharʿī ownership of a bondwoman). Any other method — including masturbation — is crossing the limits set by Allah and an act of disobedience.
◈ Sharʿī Status of Masturbation
✿ In the view of the Qur’ān, masturbation is ʿudwān (transgression) — exceeding limits.
✿ It deviates from the natural and pure means of fulfilling desires (nikāḥ), leading to both spiritual and physical harm.
✿ Some fuqahāʾ (jurists) have declared it ḥarām, while others have regarded it as makrūh taḥrīmī (prohibitively disliked).
✿ In all scholarly positions, it remains impermissible and sinful.
◈ Punishment for Masturbation
✿ There is no prescribed ḥadd punishment in Sharīʿah for masturbation.
✿ Instead, it falls under taʿzīr, a discretionary punishment decided by the Islamic judge (qāḍī).
✿ The punishment cannot exceed ten lashes.
❀ Conclusion
◈ Masturbation is a moral and religious crime condemned by the Qur’ān.
◈ There is no fixed ḥadd for it, but a taʿzīr punishment may be applied.
◈ A Muslim must avoid this sinful act and fulfill natural desires through nikāḥ in order to safeguard himself from Allah’s disobedience.
