Sharʿī Ruling on Women Teaching in the Mosque During Menstruation Days

Ruling on Women Teaching in the Mosque During Menstrual Days

Source: Qur’an and Hadith Based Rulings and Issues, Vol. 01, p. 555

Question

If arrangements for female students’ religious education and teaching have been made in the mosque, can a female teacher continue teaching during her “special days” (menstruation) while sitting in the mosque?

If this is not possible, then due to this Sharʿī excuse, the students will have to be given a week’s holiday every month.

It should also be noted that the mosque’s gallery itself has been made into a madrasa, where women also perform Jumuʿah prayers. Moving nearly one hundred students to another location outside the mosque is not possible. Please provide a practical solution.

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

✿ A woman who is teaching cannot sit and continue her teaching in the mosque during her menstruation, because entering the mosque in those days is Sharʿan prohibited.

✿ Therefore, during those days, arrangements for teaching should be made outside the mosque.
