Written by: Qārī Usāmah bin ʿAbd al-Salām ḥafiẓahullāh
Zakat is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam, and neglecting it is a grave sin. The Qur’an and Hadith clearly describe serious warnings and severe consequences for those who do not fulfill this obligation—both in this world and the Hereafter.
Allāh ﷻ says:
(Sūrah al-Tawbah: 34–35)
Translation:
“Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allāh—give them tidings of a painful punishment. The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and with it their foreheads, sides, and backs will be branded—[saying], ‘This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard.’”
This verse is a clear and terrifying warning against hoarding wealth and neglecting Zakat, highlighting the torment such individuals will face.
Allāh ﷻ says:
"وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ أَقَامُوا التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنجِيلَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِم مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ لَأَكَلُوا مِن فَوْقِهِمْ وَمِن تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِهِمْ"
(Sūrah al-Tawbah: 75)
This verse illustrates that fulfilling the commandments, including paying Zakat, would result in abundant sustenance. Not paying Zakat leads to loss of blessings and restricted provision.
The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:
“Whoever is given wealth by Allāh and does not pay its Zakat, his wealth will be made into a bald-headed poisonous snake with two black dots over its eyes. It will encircle his neck on the Day of Judgement and say: ‘I am your wealth, I am your treasure!’”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1403, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 988)
A vivid and horrifying image meant to warn the negligent, showing the personal torment they will endure.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whenever a nation withholds Zakat, Allāh withholds rain from them. Were it not for the animals, rain would not be sent down at all.”
(Sunan Ibn Mājah: 4019)
Neglecting Zakat not only harms the individual but causes collective suffering, such as drought and economic instability.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Those who do not pay Zakat on their wealth—on the Day of Judgement, their wealth will be heated in the Fire of Hell and used to brand their bodies.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 987)
A terrifying punishment that reinforces the seriousness of withholding Zakat.
✔ Neglecting Zakat is a grave violation that leads to destruction in both worlds.
✔ The Qur’an and Hadith are filled with severe warnings—torment in the Hereafter, poverty, loss of blessings, and spiritual ruin in this life.
✔ Every eligible Muslim must pay Zakat on time, seeking Allāh’s mercy, blessings, and protection from His punishment.
May Allāh grant us sincerity in fulfilling our obligations and protect us from heedlessness. Āmīn.
