Seven Guidelines on Funeral Prayer for One Who Committed a Major Sin
In Islam, the general ruling is that the funeral prayer is offered for every Muslim, including those guilty of major sins.
However, in certain cases, prominent scholars or respected leaders may refrain from leading the funeral prayer to serve as a public deterrent against sin.
Hadith — Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (رضي الله عنه):
The Prophet ﷺ would inquire about a deceased person’s debt before leading their funeral prayer.
Hadith — Zayd ibn Khalid (رضي الله عنه):
A man died at Khaybar, and the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Pray over your companion, for he stole from the war booty."
(al-Nasa’i 1951)
Hadith — Jabir ibn Samurah (رضي الله عنه):
The Prophet ﷺ did not lead the funeral prayer for a man who had killed himself.
(Muslim 978)
Fatwa — Shaykh Ibn Baz رحمه الله:
Hadith:
Respected scholars should refrain from leading the funeral prayer of one who committed a major sin without repentance so that people take warning and avoid such sins.
If a sinner repents or has the prescribed punishment applied in this life, it is recommended for scholars to lead their funeral prayer.
Example:
A woman confessed to zina; the Prophet ﷺ had the punishment carried out, then prayed over her and supervised her burial.
(Muslim 1695)
