Sayyidunā Ibn ʿAbbās’s Commentary on the Judgments of Sayyidunā ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه)

Source: Monthly al-Ḥadīth, Hazro – Research and Summary of the Book

Narration:
Ṭāwūs رحمه الله
reported:

"أُتي ابن عباس بكتاب فيه قضاء علي رضي الله فمحاه إلا قدر"

"A document containing the legal judgments of ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه) was brought to Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه), and he erased all of it except for a portion."

Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah رحمه الله gestured with his forearm to indicate that only a very small portion was left.

[Muqaddimah Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 23]

This report highlights that although Sayyidunā Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) held Sayyidunā ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه) in high regard, he did not accept all of his judicial opinions and only retained what he considered in agreement with his own understanding of the Sharīʿah.
