❖ The Question

Is it permissible to say ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam after the name of every Prophet just as it is said after the name of Muḥammad ﷺ? Since in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim it is narrated that the Prophet ﷺ himself used this phrase after the name of ʿĪsā عليه السلام and other Prophets, can we also say it? And is it permissible for every believer to do so?

❖ The Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

It is permissible for every Muslim — and even non-Muslims — to say ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam with the name of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as well as with the names of other noble Prophets عليهم السلام.

In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, it is authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ himself said ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam after mentioning ʿĪsā ibn Maryam عليه السلام.

And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is the best example for everyone to follow, as Allah ﷻ says:

﴿وَاتَّبِعُوْہُ لَعَلَّکُمْ تَہْتَدُوْنَ﴾
(Al-Aʿrāf 7:158)

“And follow him, so that you may be guided.”
