Salawat (Darood) upon the Prophet ﷺ: Rulings, Virtues, and Proper Etiquette

❖ Rulings on Reciting Salawat in Various Conditions

Reciting Salawat without Wudu or in a State of Impurity:
It is permissible for a person to send blessings (Salawat) upon the Prophet ﷺ even without Wudu, or in a state of major impurity (janabah), menstruation, or postpartum bleeding.

Using Salawat as a Means in Du'a:
Invoking blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ can be used as a means (wasilah) in supplications. Based on the Quran and Sunnah, employing righteous deeds as wasilah in du'a is a valid and recommended practice.

Responding to Mention of the Prophet by a Non-Muslim or Innovator:
If the Prophet ﷺ is mentioned by a non-believer or an innovator, one should still recite Salawat, in accordance with the Hadith:
"Whoever hears mention of me and does not send blessings..." – implying that Salawat should follow any mention of the Prophet ﷺ, regardless of the source.

During the Friday Sermon (Khutbah):
If the Prophet ﷺ is mentioned during the Friday sermon, it is required for the listeners to silently recite Salawat upon him.

Hearing the Prophet’s Name During Prayer:
If one hears the Prophet ﷺ being mentioned during Salah, they should complete the prayer first, and then recite Salawat afterwards.

❖ Etiquette and Wording of Salawat

Preference for Prophetic Formulas:
It is better to use the wording of Salawat transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ. Nonetheless, Salawat expressed in other respectful and sound phrases, free from innovations or associating partners with Allah, is also permissible, as practiced by scholars of the past.

Fabricated Virtues of Non-Prophetic Phrases:
Attributing specific, fabricated virtues to non-prophetic versions of Salawat is an act of religious innovation (bid’ah). Inventing false merits for even authentic Salawat forms is also unacceptable and constitutes religious fabrication.

❖ Summary

Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ is a virtuous act encouraged in every condition—whether one is in Wudu or not. It is permitted for women during menstruation and for those in a state of major impurity. It is allowed to make du'a using Salawat as a means, and one must recite Salawat upon hearing the Prophet’s name, even if mentioned by a non-believer or an innovator.

During the Friday sermon, listeners should silently send blessings. If mentioned during Salah, one should recite Salawat after finishing the prayer. While the best form is what has been transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ, any suitable, respectful wording is allowed, as long as it avoids innovations. Claiming false merits for unverified phrases of Salawat is religiously impermissible and must be avoided.
