Ruling on Discharge During Playfulness with One’s Wife

Question

A man states that when he engages in playful interaction or kissing with his wife, he finds some discharge in his trousers from his private part. He asks about the implications of this regarding purity (ṭahārah) and the validity or invalidity of fasting.

Answer

In the question, the man did not mention experiencing ejaculation (mani) due to playfulness with his wife. He only mentioned finding some discharge in his trousers. This apparently indicates — and Allah knows best — that the fluid is madhī (pre-seminal fluid), not manī (semen).

  • Madhī is impure (najis).
  • The portion of the garment or trousers on which it falls must be washed.
  • It nullifies wudū’, and it is necessary to wash the penis and the testicles before performing wudū’ to regain purity.
  • According to the sound opinion of scholars, it neither invalidates the fast nor necessitates ghusl.

However, if the discharged fluid is manī, then:

  • Ghusl becomes obligatory.
  • The fast is invalidated.
  • Though manī is pure, human nature finds it repulsive, so washing the soiled area of the clothes or trousers is legislated.

For a fasting person, it is more appropriate and better to avoid actions that arouse sexual desire — whether through playfulness with the wife or kissing — to safeguard the fast.
