Ruling on Wiping Over the Turban: Purity and Time Conditions

Ruling on the Condition of Purity and Duration for Wiping Over the Turban

Question:

Is the condition of purity and duration for wiping over the turban the same as for wiping over leather socks (khuffayn)?

Answer by: Fadhilat al-Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir (Hafizahullah)

There are differing views among scholars on this issue:

View of Shaykh Ibn Baz (رحمه الله):

  • It is a condition that the turban be worn in a state of purity (i.e., after performing ablution).
  • The duration for wiping is limited to one day and one night (24 hours), similar to the ruling for wiping over khuffayn.
  • Only that turban is eligible for wiping which is wrapped around the head.

View of Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (رحمه الله):

  • Quoting Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله), he stated that it is not a condition to wear the turban in a state of purity.
  • There is no fixed duration for wiping over the turban.
  • This is also a valid and respectable opinion.

✅ Conclusion:

Fadhilat al-‘Aalim Hafiz Qamar Hasan (Hafizahullah) has regarded the opinion of Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) as more correct and has deemed its reasoning to be sound.
