Ruling on Whether to Eat First or Pray When Extremely Hungry

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

In a situation of extreme hunger, when the time for prayer has entered, should one eat first or perform the prayer?

❀ Answer:

✦ If the food has been served and placed before a person, then he should eat first before performing the prayer.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stated:

"When dinner is served and the prayer is established, eat your dinner first."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Adhan, Bab Idha Hadara al-Taʿam wa Uqimat al-Salah;
Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Masajid, Bab Karahiyat al-Salah bi Hadhrat al-Taʿam;
Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Abwab al-Salah, Bab Ma Jaʾa Idha Hadarat al-ʿIsha wa Uqimat al-Salah)

✿ Wisdom Behind the Instruction:

The Prophet ﷺ emphasized beginning with food when it is served, even if the congregational prayer has commenced. This ruling aims to ensure that the individual performs salah with focus and tranquility, rather than being distracted by hunger.

He ﷺ also said:

"When food is placed before you and the prayer is established, then start with your food."
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Masajid)

This Hadith further clarifies that eating takes precedence if the food is already served, so that one may perform the prayer with full presence of mind and khushuʿ (humility).

✔ Summary:

① If food has been served and hunger is intense, one should eat first, even if prayer time has started.
② This is based on clear instructions from the Prophet ﷺ to avoid distraction during prayer.
③ The goal is to ensure concentration and calmness in worship.
