Ruling on Wearing Clothes Used During Intimacy for Prayer

Written by: Sheikh Mubashir Ahmad Rabbani (may Allah protect him)

Question:

Is it permissible to pray in clothes that were worn during intimacy?

Answer:

According to the Qur'an and Sunnah, if a man wears clothes while being intimate with his wife and there is no impurity (such as semen) on those clothes, it is permissible to pray in them. However, if semen has soiled the clothes, then it should be washed off if it is wet. After washing, if a stain remains visible, there is no harm. If the semen has dried, simply scraping it off will suffice.

It is narrated from Amir Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray in the same clothes in which he had been intimate. She replied:

"Yes, as long as there was no impurity on them."

[Abu Dawood, Book of Purification: Chapter on Prayer in Clothes Used for Intimacy: 366; Nasai 1/155; Ibn Majah 1/192]

This Hadith clarifies that as long as the clothes are free from visible impurities, it is permissible to pray in them.
