❓ Question by: Muhammad Ameen
Is it an authentic ḥadīth that “The Prophet ﷺ forbade urinating near the doors of the mosques”? Where is this ḥadīth found and what is its chain of narration?

The Answer:

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!

◈ Narration of the Ḥadīth:

This ḥadīth has been reported by Imām Abū Dāwūd رحمه الله in his book “Al-Marāsīl” (Pg. 5), narrated from Makhḥūl:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade urinating near the entrances of mosques.”

◈ Status of the Ḥadīth:

This is a Mursal ḥadīth — meaning that the Tābiʿī (Makhḥūl) narrated directly from the Prophet ﷺ without mentioning the Companion (Ṣaḥābī).

② In the science of ḥadīth, Mursal narrations are considered weak (ḍaʿīf) unless supported by other authentic chains.

◈ Principles of Ḥadīth Evaluation:

Mursal narrations fall under the category of weak reports unless they are strengthened by other ṣaḥīḥ narrations.

✔ However, the meaning of this ḥadīth aligns with sound juristic reasoning, as urinating near mosque entrances causes foul odor and discomfort to worshippers, which is clearly discouraged in the Sharīʿah.

✅ Conclusion:

✔ The chain of narration of this ḥadīth is weak, as it is Mursal.
Its meaning is valid and consistent with the general Islamic teachings of purity and the sanctity of mosques.
✔ Urinating near the doors of mosques is against proper etiquette and a disliked action, as supported by other authentic reports.
