Ruling on the Fast of a Person Who Sleeps All Day

❀ Question:
What is the ruling for someone who sleeps all day during Ramadan? What if he wakes up only to perform obligatory duties and then returns to sleep?

✔ Answer:

This question pertains to two scenarios:
A person who sleeps the entire day and does not wake even for obligatory acts like salah (prayer):
→ This individual is sinful and guilty of neglecting Allah’s commands by abandoning salah, which is a major transgression.
→ If he is also required to pray in congregation but neglects it, he commits another sin.

Such a person is like someone who constructs a palace but demolishes a city.
→ He must repent to Allah, and upon waking, must perform his prayers in their appointed times.

A person who wakes to perform the obligatory prayers, especially in congregation, and then returns to sleep:
→ This person is not sinful,
→ But he deprives himself of immense rewards, because a fasting person should ideally engage in:
✔ Salah,
✔ Remembrance of Allah (Dhikr),
✔ Supplication (Dua), and
✔ Recitation of the Qur’an.

By doing so, he combines multiple forms of worship while in the state of fasting.

One who accustoms himself to worship, finds it easy and enjoyable. On the other hand, one who indulges in laziness and comfort will find it difficult to perform righteous deeds even while fasting.

🕋 Advice:
Do not spend the entire day of fasting in sleep. Instead, be eager for acts of worship.

✦ Praise be to Allah for the ease and comfort provided in modern times—such as air conditioning—which make fasting much more bearable.
