Derived from: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol 1, Kitāb al-ʿAqāʾid, p. 215
What is the Islamic ruling on sprinkling water on the private part after performing Wudū?
Masʿūd Aḥmad B.Sc. has mentioned a narration about this in his book—clarification is sought.
(Zafar ʿĀlam, Lahore)
Alḥamdulillāh, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allāh. To proceed:
Masʿūd Aḥmad B.Sc. cited a narration about sprinkling water on the private part after Wudū from Bulūgh al-Amānī (Vol 2, p. 53).
This narration also appears with the same chain in the following books:
Musnad Aḥmad (Vol 4, p. 161)
Musnad ʿAbd bin Ḥumayd (Ḥadīth: 283)
Sunan Ibn Mājah (Ḥadīth: 462)
However, the chain of this narration is weak due to the following reasons:
— Ibn Luhayʿah was considered weak due to his mixing of narrations, and there is no evidence to confirm this narration was before his confusion.
— He was also a Mudallis (obfuscating) narrator, known to narrate from weak sources without clarification.
(Ṭabaqāt al-Mudallisin by Ibn Ḥajar)
— Ḥāfiẓ al-Būṣayrī wrote about this narration:
“This chain is weak due to the weakness of Ibn Luhayʿah.”
(Zawāʾid Ibn Mājah, p. 97, Ḥadīth 165 / Alt version: 462)
— Additionally, Imām al-Zuhrī, even if the narration is authentic from him, was also a Mudallis, and narrated this with "ʿan" (ambiguous) transmission, which further weakens the chain.
In Sunan Abū Dāwūd (Kitāb al-Ṭahārah, Bāb fī al-Intiḍāḥ, pp. 166–168) and other books, there is a narration with ḥasan (good) chain which states:
The Prophet ﷺ sprinkled water on his private part after performing Wudū.
This narration has been graded authentic according to the criteria of Bukhārī and Muslim by:
Al-Ḥākim and Al-Dhahabī in al-Mustadrak (Vol 1, p. 171)
Due to the presence of this authentic narration, the earlier weak narration also reaches the level of ḥasan li-ghayrih (good due to supporting evidence).
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) reported:
A man complained: “When I pray, I feel that there is moisture on my private part.”
Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) replied:
“May Allāh destroy Shayṭān! He touches the man’s private part so he thinks his Wudū is broken. When you perform Wudū, sprinkle water on your private part, so that if you later feel moisture, you can attribute it to the water sprinkled.”
(Muṣannaf ʿAbd al-Razzāq, Vol 1, p. 151, Ḥadīth 583)
Nāfiʿ, the freed slave of Ibn ʿUmar, reported:
Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) used to sprinkle water on his private part after performing Wudū.
(Ibn Abī Shaybah, Vol 1, p. 167, Ḥadīth 1775) – Its chain is authentic.
✔ Sprinkling water on the private part after Wudū is an established practice, and is considered recommended (mustaḥabb)—especially to protect oneself from doubts and whispers (waswasah).
✔ This practice is supported by authentic narrations and the actions of the Companions.
✔ While there are weak narrations on the matter, the presence of sound narrations renders this act valid and actionable.
